What makes someone a hero? Books, stories, movies and myths have all outlined a specific mold for a hero. There are ingredients that, when all present, produce someone with a little extra than the everyday guy. Let’s look at a few characters that have been labelled as ‘heroes’.

Aragorn from Lord of the Rings. Tolkien created one of the most iconic heroes of the literary world, everything about Aragorn just shouts the word. His main characteristics – loyalty, nobility, bravery and integrity. He never let his friends down, he fought for what he believed in, he did not let evil corrupt him and he faced his greatest fears with great courage putting the welfare of others always before his own.

Eric Liddell from History. He was a great runner who by living what he believed and not letting himself be tempted, upheld his morals. He showed a strength of spirit and a devotion to his faith that put him above the normal man. By denying himself an easy life he gained so much more.

Joshua from the Bible. Joshua was a man of faith. He did not allow temptation to ruin him or anger to control him. By following the will of God, Joshua successfully led the Israelites into the promised land. He showed a few more characteristics imperative for a hero: leadership, commitment, devotion and a willingness to shoulder responsibility. That is something that is extremely important, for the one who leads to understand that when things are going well he will get praise, but when things go wrong, it is all on his head.

William Wilberforce from History. One of my favourite people in history. He showed extreme commitment to his cause, fighting with all he could through illness, failure and pain. Mr. Wilberforce showed the true mettle of a hero – he stood up for those who could not stand up for themselves and gave his life to save the lives of others.

William Thatcher from a movie. A peasant who believed he could be a knight. Perseverance and commitment. In this hero we also see other characteristics that I believe are paramount – valour, a humble spirit, and the heart to fight for right.

The world needs heroes, now more than ever.
