Time of Great Causes

While listening to a lecture this morning on environmental biology, I got to thinking. The professor was talking about different issues affecting the marine ecosystems around Perth’s coast. So much damage, waste and even cruelty going on every day right under our noses. This led my thoughts somewhere else – I suddenly felt rather hopeless at the state of the world – there is so much that is wrong, broken and lost. I began to feel depressed, until suddenly, it struck me.

This is a time of great causes. It is a time for certain people to get up and stand up for what is right, it is the time to make history and memories, to right wrongs and bring justice. It is the time for heroes, for there is no real chance for a hero to prove his worth and what he is capable of without a worthy cause.

In times past men used to search for noble causes, knights would journey to the Holy Land, just looking for something that could give their short lives meaning. We are lucky here and now – we need not search the world over for great causes – they are right in front of us.

In books and tales there is usually only one victor, only one who fights the insurmountable odds and makes a difference. But now, in out time and world, there are so many opportunities to make differences – all we need to do is step up and accept the challenge.

The time for heroes….
