Secret Ingredient

It is no secret that I adore reading – it is an unparalleled adventure for me, and one that I crave. There is almost nothing as wonderful as finding a book that draws you in and allows you to become an important part of the story – one that allows you to be the hero or heroine and experience all they go through. It is extremely hard these days to find a book like this, one that you cannot put down and you look forward to those tedious train trips just to read the next part with no interruption. I have heard people mention that the special ingredient for a good character in a book is the ability to relate to them. I agree in part with this, but what I also think is very important is for the character to be someone so intriguing, so believable that you cannot help but be drawn into the story. I don’t think it is reality we are actually looking for, I think it is the chance to be and do something that we would never get the chance to do and be in this life. We are not looking for normal, we are looking for exceptional – an adventure beyond our imagination. Maybe we are tricking ourselves into believing we are actually part of the adventure, but maybe this is just another way of actually ‘going’ on one. I think people look for characters who have an element they can relate to, but also ones that ‘sparkle’ – have that strength or ability that you always dreamed of. The characters that allow you to, for a little while, shed your skin and live a different reality. Ones that allow you to join them in completing their perilous quest, saving their world, finding true love, or any such plot. I take my hat off to authors with this skill – and a big thank you to all those who allow us to take these adventures and meet these marvellous characters. 🙂
